RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education)

At Emscote Infant School, we believe that Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) helps children to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to understand themselves, build positive relationships and stay safe.

RSHE is taught through the Yasmine and Tom scheme of work, which supports children in learning about friendships, feelings, families, bodies, health, wellbeing and keeping safe. The lessons are age-appropriate and build children’s understanding in a sensitive and supportive way. You can find out more about the scheme here:

RSHE is taught during the second half of the Summer term. Our teaching is carefully planned to support children’s personal, social and emotional development and links closely with our wider PSHE curriculum.

What children learn

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

There is no statutory requirement for RSHE to be taught in EYFS; however, children develop important foundations through Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED), including understanding relationships, feelings, self-care and keeping safe.

Year 1

Children learn about:

  • What makes boys and girls similar and different, and understanding that there are many different ways to be ourselves.
  • Friendships, feelings and how to solve problems when relationships become difficult.
  • Different types of families and celebrating similarities and differences.
  • Appreciating that all bodies are different and learning how to respond to unkind comments.
  • Recognising safe and unsafe situations and knowing how to seek help.
  • The importance of sleep, healthy routines and keeping clean.
  • How to stay safe in the sun.
  • The importance of good manners and being respectful towards others.

Year 2

Children build on their learning by exploring:

  • Looking after themselves and understanding personal hygiene.
  • Naming body parts, including private and personal body parts, and understanding privacy.
  • Keeping safe and knowing trusted adults they can talk to.
  • Healthy eating and making choices that support a healthy lifestyle.
  • Recognising emotions and learning strategies to manage feelings, including anger.
  • Understanding how exercise helps keep our bodies healthy.

Working together with families

We recognise the important role families play in supporting children’s understanding of relationships, health and wellbeing. We encourage open conversations at home and provide opportunities for parents and carers to understand what children are learning in school.

Our aim is for every child to develop confidence, respect for themselves and others, and the skills they need to make safe and healthy choices as they grow.
