Personal Development and Wider Curriculum
At Emscote Infant School, personal development is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to nurturing confident, resilient and curious learners who are well-prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond the classroom. Our wider curriculum is carefully designed to support children’s emotional, social, moral and cultural development alongside their academic learning.
Our Vision
We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive. Through our personal development and wider curriculum, we aim to help children:
-
Develop confidence, independence and self-belief
-
Build positive relationships and show respect for others
-
Understand right and wrong and make positive choices
-
Develop resilience, perseverance and a growth mindset
-
Become kind, caring and responsible members of the school community
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)
PSHE is a key part of our curriculum and is woven throughout school life. Lessons are age-appropriate and engaging, helping children to understand themselves and the world around them. Through PSHE, children learn about:
-
Feelings and emotions
-
Friendships and relationships
-
Staying safe and healthy
-
Respect, fairness and responsibility
-
Managing change and transition
These lessons support children’s emotional wellbeing and help them develop the skills they need to navigate everyday situations with confidence.
British Values
At Emscote Infant School, we actively promote British Values in an age-appropriate way. Children are encouraged to understand and demonstrate:
-
Democracy – having a voice, making choices and understanding fairness
-
The Rule of Law – understanding rules, routines and why they matter
-
Individual Liberty – making safe choices and expressing opinions
-
Mutual Respect and Tolerance – valuing differences and showing kindness to everyone
These values are embedded through assemblies, class discussions, stories and daily interactions.
Wider Curriculum Opportunities
Our wider curriculum enriches children’s learning and helps them discover new interests and talents. Opportunities include:
-
Educational visits and visitors
-
Enrichment days and themed weeks
-
Art, music and performance opportunities
-
Outdoor learning and physical activity
-
Celebrating cultural events and festivals
These experiences broaden children’s horizons and make learning meaningful and memorable.
Pupil Voice
We believe that children’s voices matter. We provide opportunities for pupils to share their ideas, feelings and opinions through:
-
Class discussions and circle time
-
School councils or pupil groups
-
Daily reflection and praise
-
An annual Chid SEF (self evaluation form)
Listening to our pupils helps us create a supportive environment where children feel valued and respected.
Supporting Wellbeing
Children’s wellbeing is a priority at Emscote Infant School. We work closely with families and external agencies where appropriate to ensure every child feels safe, supported and happy. Our nurturing approach helps children develop strong emotional foundations that support learning and personal growth.
Through our personal development and wider curriculum, we aim to inspire children to become confident learners, thoughtful friends and responsible citizens, ready to embrace new challenges with enthusiasm and positivity.
