Writing
At Emscote Infant School, we believe that writing is a vital life skill that enables children to communicate their ideas, thoughts and creativity with confidence. Writing is taught as part of our broad and balanced English curriculum.
We aim to inspire all children to develop a love of writing by providing meaningful, engaging opportunities across a range of genres, including stories, poetry and non-fiction. High-quality texts are at the heart of our teaching, helping children to build vocabulary, understand different styles and develop their own authorial voice.
Our Approach to Writing
Writing at Emscote is developed through a clear progression of skills:
- Early Writing (Reception)
Children begin by exploring mark-making and developing their fine motor skills. They learn to express their ideas through drawings, labels and simple sentences, supported by phonics and storytelling. - Building Skills (Year 1)
Children develop sentence structure, punctuation and spelling through daily writing opportunities. They begin to write for different purposes and audiences, using their growing knowledge of phonics to support their independence. - Developing Writers (Year 2)
Children write with increasing confidence and stamina, creating longer pieces across a range of genres. They learn to organise their ideas, use varied vocabulary and apply grammar accurately.
Key Elements of Writing
Our writing curriculum focuses on:
- Transcription – spelling and handwriting
- Composition – planning, drafting and editing ideas
- Grammar and Punctuation – understanding how writing works
- Vocabulary Development – choosing ambitious and appropriate language
These elements are taught both within English lessons and across the wider curriculum, giving children meaningful contexts for writing.
Supporting Every Child
We are committed to ensuring that all children feel valued and supported in their writing journey. Through high-quality teaching, modelling and targeted support, we help every child to reach their full potential and develop confidence as a writer.
Writing for Purpose and Pleasure
At Emscote, we want children to see themselves as writers. We provide opportunities for them to:
- Write creatively and imaginatively
- Share their work with others
- Write for real purposes and audiences
- Take pride in their presentation and achievements
By nurturing a love of language and storytelling, we aim to equip our children with the skills they need for lifelong learning.
