Our Approach to Writing

Writing at Emscote is developed through a clear progression of skills:

• Early Writing (Reception)
  Children begin by exploring mark-making and developing their fine motor skills. They learn to express their ideas through drawings, labels and simple sentences, supported by phonics and storytelling.
• Building Skills (Year 1)
  Children develop sentence structure, punctuation and spelling through daily writing opportunities. They begin to write for different purposes and audiences, using their growing knowledge of phonics to support their independence.
• Developing Writers (Year 2)
  Children write with increasing confidence and stamina, creating longer pieces across a range of genres. They learn to organise their ideas, use varied vocabulary and apply grammar accurately.

Key Elements of Writing

Our writing curriculum focuses on:

• Transcription – spelling and handwriting
• Composition – planning, drafting and editing ideas
• Grammar and Punctuation – understanding how writing works
